Just before lockdown we start to replace the ridge of the thatched roof of Hoste Barn. This is something that needs to be done after the first 15 years of a thatched roof’s life. Not only does the ridge get replaced but the rest of the thatched roof is combed and wired to protect it for the future. This is always an exciting time as the roof when complete looks fresh and smart. Watching the skill of the thatchers is also a great experience. I was lucky enough to climb to the ridge and see this work in progress which gives a very different perspective. The work is now complete and the barn now looks like brand new! Below are some photos taken at the time to document the process.
